Derek Landy returns his iconic skeleton detective to the bookshelves.

Scepter of the Ancients returns with Stephanie Edgley in Playing with Fire. Playing with Fire, a fitting sequel to the first novel, continues to thrill readers.

Landy sets Playing with Fire about a year after his first novel. Stephanie is now apprenticed to Skullduggery Pleasant.  She fights crime under a new moniker, Valkryie Cain.

While dealing with the usual misfits, Skullduggery’s old enemy, Baron Vengeous, plans to use a monster, the Grotesquery, to cause more chaos. The duo’s new quest is to stop the monster before it destroys everything. Stephanie experiences twists and turns along her crime-fighting journey.

Many praise the novel as being well-paced, and full of adventure that grips attention. The blend of humor, magic, adventure and dialogue is engaging. Fight scenes are well timed.

Landy handles Stephanie’s name change gracefully and unobtrusively. It allows her to blend well with Skullduggery, and the surrounding environment.

Slower-paced reflection could balance fast-paced action. This will give readers a chance to breathe. Others found the long fight scene in the chapter “Fight”, a little tiresome.

This book is suitable for lovers of action, whose attention is easily diverted. The imaginative elements will enrapture fantasy lovers.
